It’s something we hear all the time, “They just don’t make them like they used to.” But how many of us really heed these words of wisdom and actually check the products we purchase for defects? Over the past year or so, I’ve ran into numerous instances where I had received a defective product; in fact, I would be willing to say that at least fifty percent of the items I’ve purchased in the past year have been defective. Last Christmas, my parents gave my fiancée and I a $300 gift card for Brookstone, a store and catalog and online retailer similar to The Sharper Image. Since Brookstone, like The Sharper Image, offers an overwhelming assortment of expensive niche items, we figured $300 really wouldn’t get us that far.
And it didn’t.
However, what we did get was pretty awesome: a pair of wireless speakers that could be set up remotely anywhere in our apartment and linked to our computers or iPods. When they came in, I was very pleasantly surprised. After some initial trouble getting them to transmit over the frequency they had been set to, we finally got them up and running. They sounded better than any compact home speakers I’ve ever owned and were almost on par with such brands as Bose. Thumping lows, defined mids, and well-rounded and clear highs. For $300, they ought to sound pretty good.
Then, after a couple of days, the problem we thought had been solved once again reared its ugly head. The speakers began to become intermittent, and finally wouldn’t transmit at all. We hadn’t moved, or even reset the frequency of the speakers this whole time. It became apparent that it was time to pick up the phone.
I ended up calling Brookstone several times because not a single one of their customer service reps knew how to properly handle an exchange. Since we both absolutely loved the speakers, we were not content to have to buy something else. Eventually, I got a girl with some common sense and some courtesy on the line who took the time to go and do some research and call me back, rather than making me call back.
This very nice girl assured me that I could send the speakers back and that they would send a new set out immediately and thanked me for my patience in a very polite manner. I packed up the speakers and sent them back to Brookstone and waited several weeks, as I was advised.
Then, nothing.
Nothing happened. Curious as to what was taking so long, I picked up the phone again. Low and behold, they didn’t have anymore of the speakers in stock, and hadn’t had them since before I had called. Even worse, they were discontinued, and I would not be able to get the same speakers, though I had been assured several times that I would. Infuriated, I then had to speak with several different people and wait over an hour on the phone just to get the money refunded to a gift card that would then have to be sent out through the mail, making the wait even longer.
When I did get the card, my fiancée and I ordered several smaller items, one of which was an iPod-docking stereo. Not only is the sound extremely subpar, it also refuses to play about 50% of the CDs that I place in it.
My advice: stay as absolutely far away from a Brookstone as possible. After reading up a little bit online, it appears that I’m not the only one who’s had this experience. Not a single representative or even call center manager had a clue what he or she was talking about, and most of them were rude to boot. What kind of place tells the customer to call back because the person who answered doesn’t know something? Even the people who seemed like they knew what was going on didn’t know anything; apparently, they were just trying to appease another irate customer. You’re probably better off going to a Sharper Image.
