From Carriage House to eatery for the Common Folk in Little Valley

Not too far off the beaten path, those looking for a homestyle meal can find what they are looking for, as well as an experience, all in a stop along Route 353, between Little Valley and Salamanca.

Robert Rusiniak, a native of the Buffalo area, had been working at another Southern Tier restaurant when he decided it was time to spread his wings and branch out on his own.

“I wanted to do something on my own,” he said. “ I have always worked in the food business, including at the Aud Club, in the old Auditorium.”

A move to the Southern Tier to work for family friends helped him learn the restaurant business as it is in the Southern Tier. As time passed, and his knowledge of the business grew, Mr. Rusiniak decided to start looking for locations. Nothing was working for him, but he kept passing this building built with stone from the area.

“I kept driving past here (what is now the Coach Inn) and said, ‘Someone aught to do something with that place.’ It was a major undertaking. I drove up the driveway to find out about the place.”

The restaurant that is now in the location has become known for its basic, family style food.

“Nothing fancy, we are basic,” Mr Rusiniak said of his menu. “We do your basic pork chops, potatoes and macaroni and cheese. We do fish fries every day. Ours have potatoes, cole slaw, the whole dinner. We do Kabobs as well, and have two or three soups in a day for winter.”

The choice of going with a family style menu was simple for Mr. Rusiniak. All he had to do was take a look at the kind of people he was going to serve, personally and economically.

“Family style, because we are families,” he explained. “Nobody out there has regular meals at their restaurants. We have just a basic food. If people want fancy they can go somewhere else. I just want to give people a low cost meal.”

The menu is a result of a love of what he does and what the people of the area mean to Mr. Rusiniak.

“I want to help feed people. It’s important to me,” he said. “I do it for the people in the area and I love doing it. You have to enjoy doing it to take the bumps and the downfalls.”

The average meal at the Coach Inn will cost diners around $10 with a seafood meal being slightly more at $17. A lunch menu of sandwiches and salads will run $5.95, with soup it will be $7.50.

It wasn’t long after the agreement to buy the place was struck that work began to make his dream a reality, and Mr. Rusiniak had no idea what he was getting himself into.

“The place was rotted and gone,” he said. “There were rooms built in here and everything. Someone was trying to make a house out of it. The floors were rotted and gone and caved into the cellar. The building being made of stone is what saved it.”

Part of the charm of the Coach Inn is the historic qualities that have gone into it’s construction and renovation. The 130 year old building used to be the coach house of the area taxi service.

Remnants of an old trolley line that ran from Little Valley to Salamanca can still be seen behind the building. A little farther back is an old rail bed that has since become the Pat McGee trail that meanders throughout Cattaraugus County. With the trails that run through the area near the McGee Trail, snowmobiliers and equestrians have made the Coach Inn a destination in the rural valley in central Cattaraugus County.

As remodeling took place, Mr. Rusiniak did historical research to try to preserve original colors and décor.

“More than 80 percent of the wood in this place has been recycled from other hotels and restaurants in the region,” he said. “We wanted to keep original woodwork in the building.”

Wood from Buffalo area restaurants, hotels and churches have gone into the construction of the interior of the Coach Inn, preserving the history of the area. To continue that mission, during the renovations, a map of Cattaraugus County was burnt into the floor of the main dining room, by hand. This map shows the rivers and the rail lines of the county, and shows roadways that make their way through the landscape as well.

The journey from near collapse to family restaurant started in 2002 and finally culminated in opening in July of last year.

The Coach Inn is open Wednesday through Saturday from 3 to 11 p.m. and from 1 to 7:30 p.m. on Sundays.
