"[Wates] made us all sit up pop-eyed at what he could do with six strings."

Performing songwriter RUPERT WATES brings his brand of acoustic, melodic art / folk music to Black-Eyed Susan Acoustic Café on Saturday, May 14th.

RUPERT WATES was born in London. He has been a full time songwriter since 1992 when he signed an exclusive deal with Eaton Music Publishing. He has written songs in all kinds of styles for all kinds of artists. Since September 2006, WATES has been based in the US. His music has found a warm reception here, earning him more than 25 songwriting awards including the Gold Prize, Folk Category, 2007 Midatlantic Song Contest in Washington, DC. He plays between 120 and 150 live shows a year, and he has performed in every state in America.

““Carrying on the most fundamental aspects of the troubadour / balladeer / protester, Rupert Wates is a glorious throwback to the old Woody, Pete, Phil Ochs days filtered through a bit of Harry Chapin… Each song yanks the listener fully into the story and rhythms, not to mention an emotionality imbuing Wates's plaintively melodic voice. Trust me, Rupert Wates is an exceedingly rare talent."
Mark S. Tucker, Folk And Acoustic Music Exchange

Don Ash of Black-Eyed Susan Acoustic Café remarked, “Completely accessible at several levels, Rupert is a thinking man’s songwriter. Some of his themes are ultra-serious. So the total package is stirring. You just want to listen to every word of every song.”

The doors at Black-Eyed Susan open at 11:00 a.m. on Saturdays for lunch, with dinner, specialty coffees and desserts starting at 4:30 p.m. Balladeer JIM SCHWARTZ opens at 6:00 p.m. with RUPERT WATES beginning at 7:30 p.m. There is no cover charge, but guests are expected to contribute to the musician’s tip jar. The kitchen remains open until 10:00 p.m. and the café closes at 11:00. Reservations for dinner -- while never necessary -- are strongly encouraged.
