'Race to the South Pole' at Roger Tory Peterson Institute May 4
One hundred years ago this summer, two expeditions sailed for the Antarctic Continent. Both wanted to find and claim the Geographic South Pole for their country. Roald Amundsen, an experienced Polar explorer sailed from Norway in the "Fram." Captain Robert Falcon Scott of the British Navy sailed from England in the "Terra Nova." Their quest embodied the spirit and difficulties of the Historic Age of Polar Exploration," often called the age of iron men in wooden ships. We will examine their efforts and their personalities, and talk about the tragic end of Scott and his companions. Finally we will look at the South Pole today and advise anyone interested with advice on how to visit this southernmost point on earth.

The event is free and open to the public. Reservations not necessary, but helpful. Donations will be accepted to offset the costs of the program.
