The 1891 Fredonia Opera House will screen the comedy feature film  “Ghostbusters” on Fri., Apr. 29, at 7 p.m.   Sponsored by the Lily Dale Assembly as part of Family Night at the Movies, admission to the film is FREE.
Family Night at the Movies generally features films based on or that inspire books for children.  The series was developed as a way for adults to share the excitement of reading and great family entertainment with the children in their lives.
“Ghostbusters” is the story of three odd-ball professors (Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray and Harold Ramis) who get kicked out of their cushy positions researching the paranormal at Columbia University.  They decide to set up shop in an old firehouse and become Ghostbusters, trapping pesky ghosts, spirits and poltergeists for money. After some initial skepticism, business is soon booming as they rid New York of unwanted ghosts.  When a downtown skyscraper becomes the focal point of spirit activity linked to the ancient god Gozer, however, the problem may be more than the team can handle as they stumble upon a gateway to another dimension.   Celebrating 27 years since its initial release in 1984, “Ghostbusters” is rated PG and runs 105 minutes.
Free admission tickets are available only at the door on the night of the show.  Seating is limited to 400; and patrons are reminded that there is no food or drink allowed in the Opera House and that all children must be accompanied by an adult.  For more information, contact the Opera House at 716-679-1891 or visit www.fredopera.org.
“The Adjustment Bureau,” an action thriller starring Matt Damon  and Emily Blunt, is the next film in the Cinema Series at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House.  It will be screened on Sat., Apr. 30, at 8 p.m. and Tues., May 3, at 7:30 p.m.
Do we control our destiny, or do unseen forces manipulate us?  In “The Adjustment Bureau,” Matt Damon stars as David Norris, a man who glimpses the future Fate has planned for him and realizes he wants something else.   To get it, he must pursue the only woman he’s ever loved across, under and through the streets of modern-day New York.
On the brink of winning a seat in the U.S. Senate, ambitious politician David meets beautiful contemporary ballet dancer Elise Sellas (Emily Blunt), a woman like none he’s ever known.  But just as he realizes he’s falling for her, mysterious men conspire to keep the two apart.
David learns he is up against the agents of Fate itself – the men of The Adjustment Bureau – who will do everything in their power to prevent David and Elise from being together.  In the face of overwhelming odds, he must either let her go and accept a predetermined path … or risk everything to defy Fate and be with her.
Ann Hornaday, in the Washington Post, calls the film “a smart, stylish thriller that melds science fiction, romance and Hitchcockian intrigue with surprising ease.”   Mick La Salle, in the San Francisco Chronicle, calls it “easily one of the best American love stories of the past year.”  Todd McCarthy, in the Hollywood Reporter, calls it a “Big Brother fantasy with style and real feeling, courtesy of an excellent Matt Damon-Emily Blunt pairing.”  Stephen Whitty, in the Newark Star-Ledger, says “fans looking for something a little different will find it here – as well as the first real romance of the year.”  Rated PG-13 for brief strong language, some sexuality and a violent image, “The Adjustment Bureau” runs 106 minutes.
Tickets to the Opera House Cinema Series are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students & children) the night of each screening.   For more information, call the Opera House Box Office at 716-679-1891.  The Opera House Cinema Series continues with “Cedar Rapids” on May 14 & 17; and “Win Win” on May 21 & 24.
