A searchlight circled the audience and moved onto the stage, leading the audience’s sight towards two scared women hiding, arguing whether to obey King Creon or disobey him and do what the Gods would want: bury their brother Thebes’ body, who Creon killed and left unburied so he could reign. Eventually, when the two sisters don’t agree, one sister, Antigone, decides to bury Thebes’ body against Creon’s orders. She willingly disobeys her king, knowing her punishment will only lead to her death. The play unfolds, like most Greek tragedies, to the restoration of natural order, by Creon, Creon’s family and Antigone’s death.

“The Burial at Thebes,” was performed in the Quick Arts Center theatre at St. Bonaventure University. For those who haven’t seen a performance of the play, or haven’t read the book, Creon’s guard captures Antigone, leaves her in a cave that’s almost impossible to find and lets his son Haemon, who’s engaged to Antigone, find her if he truly loves her. Of course, we all know the play doesn’t have a happy ending, and by the time Haemon finds her she’s killed herself, and Haemon quickly follows in suit.

Performed from a contemporary perspective, some of the script had changed to sound modern, which made it much easier to follow along.

The costumes were also modern. The citizens wore normal clothes, like jeans or dress pants with shirts, and King Creon, performed by Brett Keegan, wore a suit, as did his son Haemon, (Ian Rogers). The guard (Cameron DeOrdio) wore bulletproof vest and police-like attire. Antigone, (Erin Lowry), wore a tank top and jeans, and she also had what looked like a fake lip ring. The citizens also spoke in unison most of the time, and prayed or did interpretive dance moves while others spoke. At times, however, speaking in unison made it hard to understand what they were saying.

The band also took on a very contemporary approach. Playing directly behind the actors, they were visible to the audience. Although this could sometimes be distracting, I liked this approach to the play. I found it followed the contemporary theme, and I liked how the light directly behind the band changed when the mood of the play changed. Also, the contemporary, creepy music added suspense to the play. Although I did find it hard to hear the actors speaking while the music was playing sometimes.

Not everyone seemed to enjoy it, though. Andrea Pavlovic thought the play was too interpretive and contemporary.

“I thought it was weird,” Pavlovic said about the play. “I didn’t really like how the citizens did strange dance moves and dressed normally. They should have kept the traditional interpretation, but I guess it was cool they tried something different.”

The play’s running time was about an hour and ten minutes, and went by pretty fast. For the most part, the acting was good, especially those who performed King Creon, Antigone and her sister. It was a nice experience to have a production of this Greek classic on campus, and interesting to see the producer and director’s interpretation of it. Overall, I found it effective and interesting, although my only complaint would be trying to hear what the actors were saying over the music and the chantings of the citizens.
