Kenny Wayne Shepherd and his band electrify the Seneca Allegany Casino Event Center

The Event Center at the Seneca Allegany Casino was once again a packed house Saturday night as Blues guitar virtuoso Kenny Wayne Shepherd and his band rocked the room.

From the opening note to the final chord, Shepherd let everyone know that he is one of the masters. His ability to take on the solo, and play seamlessly throughout, made it arguably the best Blues performance going on in the region this past weekend.

Even through one of those unexpected technical situations (quickly remedied by the Event center staff) Shepherd and his band electrified the audience, unphased by the malfunction.

For those not familiar with Kenny Wayne Shepherd, the guy signed his first contract in 1993 at the age of 16. Since then he has shared the stage with the likes of B.B. King and has been part of the Experience Hendrix Tour. Fittingly, he closed the show Saturday night with what could be said to be one of the best renditions of Hendrix's “Voodoo Child” to have been performed by someone other than Jimi.

Shepherd boasts that his band sounds better live and in person than they do on a CD. After nealy two hours of guitar-based Blues, this reviewer has to agree.

Nearly every song ended with the audience on their feet in adulation for the performance. I contend that, with the exception of Reggae, no other genre has the emotional appeal than Blues. Shepherd not only pulled the strings of his Fender, but also held every emotion of the audience as if it were the pick hitting the strings.

If Seneca Gaming continues to bring acts like Kenny Wayne Shepherd into the Event Center, the Seneca Allegany Casino will eclipse its big brother in Niagara Falls.

Kudos to SGC. Kudos to the staff for making it a perfect evening. Kudos to Kenny Wayne Shepherd and his band for a great evening.
