A 37-year long journey will be making a stop in Salamanca in early March. The legendary rock band, Kansas, will be stopping off at the Seneca Allegany Casino, and guitarist Rich Williams took the time to answer a few questions for Odeum.

As was mentioned, Kansas has been playing their music since 1974. Over that time hundred, even thousands of bands have come onto the scene to leave their mark, and have disappeared like, as the song goes, dust in the wind, What keeps Kansas on stage? What is it that they consider to be the thing that has kept them going for all these years?

“We have a great fan base,” Mr. Williams said. “To continue to do this, we have always kept it fun.”

Mr. Williams said part of that fun has been through working as their own managers for the last 20 years. But they operate a bit different than what most touring bands do.

“We work all year long,” he said. “Our goal, however, is to leave on Friday morning and come home on Sunday. Our schedule allows for about 60 to 75 [concert] dates a year.”

In one way, it could be said that Kansas has gone full circle in the career of a band. Most young ones start out playing Friday, Saturday and the occasional Sunday. As they progress in their career, they start to play a week-long schedule. Kansas has been able to establish themselves and play their own schedule of weekends.

“It [the schedule] really helps in not getting burned out,” Mr. Williams said. “It also keeps it fun. I wouldn't want to keep going out there on stage if it wasn't fun.”

What can those going to the March 5 show expect? Well, hopefully you like to hear live music.

“We have been doing this for 30-plus years,” Mr. Williams said. “It's what we do. We do what we do, and after 37 years we have gotten pretty good at it. The thing to remember is that we are a live act. We are guys that like to go out and play for people.”

That is the key to a good Kansas show, he continued.

“We go out for soundcheck and, like most bands, go through the motions,” Mr. Williams said. “When you put people in front it changes everything and you, as a musician, have the drive to perform your best for those people.”

So, Twin Tiers, be ready.

“We are a bunch of guys that love what we do,” Mr. Williams said. “We love live music by musicians that love to play it.”
