NBC's new superhero just may be well needed in our dark times
I like superheroes. I like comic books. I should have liked NBC's new series, The Cape, right? I did.
NBC summarizes the show as “an honest cop [Vince Faraday (David Lyons)] on a corrupt police force, who finds himself framed for a series of murders and presumed dead. He is forced into hiding, leaving behind his wife Dana (Jennifer Ferrin) and son, Trip (Ryan Wynott,). Fueled by a desire to reunite with his family and to battle the criminal forces that have overtaken Palm City, Vince Faraday becomes "The Cape" - his son's favorite comic book superhero - and takes the law into his own hands.”
To see this new figure emerge is refreshing. To see a story that incorporates the perils of big business, the ability to overcome near-fatal setbacks, is an inspiration. We live in a society where people need to have heros. We need to have figures to look up to, and not the athletes that are paid millions of dollars to play children's games.
This is a show that we should all be embracing, in this time of a two-front war, crashing economic system and a general public that has been polarized farther than at any other time in American history. Yet, I am hearing a lot of negative about the way the show was shot, about the story line, about how several parts were rushed.
Really? I thought it was just what we, as a nation, need right now.
I am not speaking of the latest tragedy to hit our nation, I am talking about the way we, as humans cope with our collective situation.
To the show first, corrupt police make it easy for a corporate entity to privatize a police force, only so the owner who doubles as a masked super-villain named Chess, can attempt to create an experimental operation zone for a super-villainous group. Pretty standard, yes. But the story is just getting started.
Faraday, one of the few good cops in the city that is not corrupt, but, as the heroes often are, is framed for killing a new police superintendent and is forced to live his life under the guise of a caped superhero called, well, "The Cape."
The now-former cop, Faraday loses everything, including his wife and son, all because of the actions of Chess. He's willing to do whatever it takes to get them back, which is where this review-blog takes a turn.
While Faraday trains with a troupe of carnival freaks that double as bank robbers (even training a raccoon to rob a bank) may be a bit extreme, the thought of doing what it takes to right a wrong is a force to which Americans can usually relate.
Let's take a look at what's going on in our popular culture for a minute. Movies that are coming out are either mindless humor (I am NOT saying this is bad, we all need to give our brains a shot of Novocaine from time to time) or a battle between good and evil, most of which are in the form of superhero movies.
In times of great strife and struggle, even times of uncertainty, our culture looks to those that have a greater power than the average person to fight our problems. It works as a way to show us that there is a hope for a better time, for a greater cause than ourselves.
This seems to be a theme in The Cape. Faraday tells his carnival master mentor, Max Malini (Keith David) that he needs to show his son that one man CAN make a difference.
Through out our history, several figures like Superman, Batman, Captain America, Spiderman, have all been created to be the heros in the eyes of our society. The people we can look up to when things look the darkest.
We are seeing a resurgence of these old heroes as the big movie houses remake so many of them.
This week, The Green Hornet will buzz back to the screen, Thor will smash his way to the screen, X-Men, Spiderman, Iron Man and GI Joe have all made a resurgence into our collective conscious. These heroes battle evil in our name. They protect us. They restore what it is that we hold sacred, kind of like the soldiers, our real-life heroes, do on a daily basis.
Is "The Cape" the figure to show a new generation that they CAN make a difference through their actions? Maybe. Can the show survive the critical reviews it seems to be attracting? Possibly. Will I be watching? Yes, I need to have that hero in a cape to give me inspiration.
The Cape can be seen on NBC on Monday's at 9 p.m.
