Seussical: A Musical With Style!
You don’t think 20-28 year olds have little kids hidden inside them? Well think again! This group from TheatreworksUSA brought Dr. Seuss classics to life on the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford stage Friday night.
As a “test-run”, the school welcomed area residents to their first-ever evening show. Usually any theater productions aimed at children are only shown during the day for local schools to come and see, but instead of just two day shows, “Seussical” performed three shows on Friday, the last one that I saw was the 75-minute version of the two and a half hour Broadway version.
Those running the program were a little nervous about the type of response they would get by offering a 7 p.m. showing, but were delighted when they had to start the production 15 minutes late because the line was out the door. This made their “test-run” turn into the first installment of an affordable family show series.
However, the musical itself got both a thumbs up and a thumbs down. First, we’ll start with the good stuff.
The vocals were fantastic! The two that were the most impressive were the Cat in the Hat and the Sour Kangaroo. The Cat in the Hat, who played many more roles than just that, was purrrfect. He had both adults and children laughing by all his different costumes and different accents that went along with each outfit! At some points he was a cookie cat, a quack doctor, a Grinch, a British whatever he was, a judge and many other things. What caught me the most about this young actor was his diversity throughout the musical and that he was able to sing in whatever accent he was doing at the time.
Then, onto the Sour Kangaroo. This actress stole the show. The girl that looked as if she was from oriental descent had the voice of an older black woman. The whole show I felt as if she reminded me of an actress’s voice I could not pinpoint, but I would have to say it was a cross between Queen Latifah and Jennifer Hudson. It had a clear, yet raspy quality that stunned the audience and made me feel like she is destined for Broadway. What also made her more entertaining was that she also played the baby kangaroo at the same time. So all the sudden she would be taking as the sour kangaroo and then this sweet, but sassy little voice would come out.
In the decoration and prop section there was very little that I liked. First, the backdrop was OK. It was a simple red and white striped drop that was very “Seussian”, but I felt could have been better. Second, Horton was in a simple grey sweat suit and a beanie hat with pink danglies – that was the entire costume for the elephant. The Kangaroo was not any better. Her outfit was a plaid brown and orange skirt with an orange hoodie that had a stuffed Kangaroo crammed inside it. Not the best costume ever. It was inventive, I’ll give you that, but it didn’t cut it. Third, the two monkeys in the movie were wearing these jackets that looked like almost exact replicas of the jackets in “Back to the Future 2” when Marty goes into the future to make sure that his son stays out of trouble. Yeah, you know the jacket I’m talking about. Fourth, with some notes the mikes would make these huge fuzzy noises in the background that overshadowed what the actors were saying or singing. Fifth, in front of the backdrop were these “trees” that looked like umbrellas missing the plastic. And on these trees they hung sponges and ovenmits as props. I’m sorry, but to me that is not even close to a tree. Finally, the speck of dust that the Who’s lived on was a blue body sponge. I was highly disappointed in these regards. All of the props and costumes were low budget looking and I was expecting more.
However, they did do two things that made up for all of that. You may not think that was possible but it was.
Remember how in “The Lion King” Broadway production, or in the clips you have seen of the production, they used stick props to symbolize each animal? Well they did that for a school of fish. These fish looked like exact replicas of those found in “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish”. Compared to all the over horrible props, these were the first things to impress me.
Then, closer to the end of the musical these life-size Seuss figures from within different Dr. Seuss books came out. They looked exactly like in those found in the book. Even down to the weird hair and colors. Two of the figures were tall and one person was within each, but within the other was two people just as seen when couples dress up as a horse for Halloween; one’s the head and, well, you know what the other person is. These figures made everything else that I disliked before not even matter because of the beautiful craftsmanship of those figures. They were just majestic.
For TheatreworksUSA, I give their production of Seusscial a thumbs up for the music aspect of it, a thumbs down for their costumes and decoration, but a big thumbs up for originality and craftsmanship of the above mention Seussian masterpieces.
If you could see their production just for that, it would make the $8 worth it. Well, only if you were a Dr. Seuss fan like I am. TheatreworksUSA has some things to work on, but their originality and vocals were dead on. I would recommend that anyone should see this musical.
However, I'm not the ultimate authority on this. Kids throughout the theater were dancing in their seats. Cadence, 6, loved when Gertrude got her big tail. Alex, her 5-year-old brother, said that the monkeys were his favorite characters. Even though certain parts I didn't feel were up to par, these two children had nothing bad to say.
