Leann Rimes delivers an intimate performance in Bradford

End it now. I’m not going to lie. This was the exact thought running through my head as I stood waiting in line for my first country concert ever: Leann Rimes at the Bradford Creative Performing Arts Center. If you’d have asked me three weeks ago the likelihood that I would ever attend such an event, I would have probably said that it’s right up there with getting an appendectomy or wearing underwear made of sandpaper on my list of things to do.

However, I try to keep an open mind with all music, and there is definitely a bit of country music that I quite like. I just wasn’t sure if Leann Rimes could fit that bill. I attempted to put my musical snobbishness behind me as I made my way to pick up my tickets. After telling a very nice lady whom I was writing for, she literally almost scared my sandpaper underpants right off.

“Oh, you’ll be going backstage for the meet and greet, then?” she probed.

Meet and greet? Of course there’s a meet and greet. I just had no idea about it, that’s all. Was I going to have to act like I knew the latest Leann Rimes trivia while getting probed by her fans? Worse yet, was I going to have to pretend that I liked Leann Rimes? But I thanked the lady kindly, and before I knew it, I was backstage.

I have to say, Rimes lived up to my initial expectations. I was enormously underwhelmed with her choice of attire: a sequined blouse that looked like it came from Studio 54 and a pair of extremely tight black jeans. However, she was surprisingly appreciative of her fans for a woman who’s been in the limelight for so long, and she posed for a photograph with every man, woman, and child in the cramped room. Somehow, I missed my opportunity, but it was pretty touching to see some lifelong fans have a chance to photograph a once in a lifetime opportunity with such a well-known artist.

After a few country licks that a former city-slicker like me could never recognize, Rimes broke into her chart-topping hit, “Blue.” Rimes delivered with enough tear-jerking, voice-cracking falsetto and deep contralto to make Patsy Cline roll over in her grave. Audience members hooted and hollered in appreciation to Rimes’ newest version of her best-known song, and Rimes thanked the audience in return for braving the cold weather to come out.

“It’s the only place warm in town!” Rimes’ commented.

Soon, the audience was clapping and stomping along with Rimes to a new tune from her latest album, Lady and Gentlemen, “Swingin.’” She moved right along, swooning locals with “Probably Wouldn’t Be This Way.”

As a student and enormous fan of music, what I found most striking was Rimes’ nearly flawless delivery of these songs. If someone had recorded this performance, edited the overwhelming applause from the end of each track, and gave it to me to listen to, I would have been hard-pressed to say whether they were live or studio tracks. A small yet incredible live band composed of a guitarist, steel guitarist, bassist, and drummer had as much to do with the impeccable presentation as Rimes, but her well-placed improvisations are what kept things lively.

She continued to show her appreciation for her fans by talking and explaining the stories behind almost each and every song, doing so with the honesty and intimacy of an MTV Unplugged or VH1 Storytellers session. She later introduced the members of her band: Rusty on the lap steel, Joey on bass, then Chris numbers one and two on drums and guitar.

“They don’t have names, they just have numbers,” joked Rimes. At least the woman had a sense of humor. Introducing her newest single, she advised the crowd to also have a sense of humor. After a small round of applause, Rimes noted, “It’s good that half of you do.” The song turned out to be “Crazy Women,” one that many people think that Rimes wrote based on her recent personal situation with Eddie Cibrian.

“I want you guys to think about who you might have dated, or who you’re married to, or who you aren’t married to and who you’ll date and you don’t know [it] yet.” A rumble of laughter made its way through the auditorium.

“I think men and women, we all have a little crazy in us, it’s just depending on what situation and who is going to make it come out, correct?” The crowd, whistling and yelling in response, seemed to agree. It was refreshing to see an artist acknowledge the thought that was in every audience member’s head, rather than duck and hide. Rimes was unapologetic and handled it with tact, dignity, and a sense of humor.

Rimes and her band played numerous other hits throughout the evening, including, “How Do I,” “Nothing Better to Do,” and “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” including an encore presentation after much ado from the audience.

“I’ve got some great fans, and I really love you, so this one’s for you,” Rimes gratefully acknowledged.

The venue at the Bradford Creative and Performing Arts Center could have been a bit larger; the entire auditorium of the Bradford Area High School was filled to the brim and additional seats had been brought and placed center stage, taking up some much needed standing and dancing room. The small space allowed for something that many concerts these days lack, however: the intimacy of true artist to audience interaction, which Rimes recognized and took full advantage of.

The performance was stellar and obviously very polished from years and years on the road, but most impressive was this connection that Rimes shared with her band and her audience. Her openness and sense of humor, by the end of the set, had audience members talking back to her from their seats. The ground literally shook with applause at more than one point throughout the evening.

Though I probably wouldn’t have gone to see Leann Rimes on my own time, it was a much more pleasant experience than I could have hoped for. Honestly, I’d probably go and see her again. Just don’t tell anyone I said so.
