New York State Museum Curator to speak Jan. 13 on “Ice Age Animals of New York” in Jamestown.
Dr. Robert Feranec, curator of vertebrate paleontology at the New York State Museum, will present “Ice Age Animals of New York” in the Carnahan Theatre on Jamestown Community College’s Jamestown Campus on Thursday, January 13 at 7 p.m.
Feranec will introduce some of the most well-known and obscure of ancient New York’s megafauna, including saber-toothed tigers, mammoths, camels and seals, that dominated the landscape then disappeared as the Ice Age eventually came to a close.
"Just 10,000 years ago in New York, we had mastodons, mammoths, and even giant beavers and ground sloths. Not only are these animals fascinating to look at, but their extinction might also inform us about the effect of climate change and humans on nature today," Dr. Feranec said.
The presentation, which is co-sponsored by the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History and JCC science department, is in conjunction with the opening of the exhibition FOSSILS! at the Institute on January 22. Dr. Feranec is visiting the Institute to install the display of the Columbian Mammoth fossils discovered in nearby Randolph, New York in 1934.
Dr. Feranec, who specializes in studying the evolution of ecology in ancient mammals, earned his master’s degree at the University of Florida and his doctorate at the University of California at Berkeley.
He has overseen excavations of mastodon remains in New York state, studied vertebrate fossils (mostly from caves) in Spain and verified new discoveries being made in New York state, including fossil seal bones discovered in September 2009 at a site along Lake Champlain. He oversaw the conservation of the Cohoes Mastodon at the New York State Museum.
