Tom Holt’s Manga Autobiography

A Review by Craig Klose and Duff Serra

Tom Holt’s Moving Pictures; Recent Untitled Works took up residence in Olean on January 8 for a run of a little over a month, courtesy of the Olean Library’s exhibition program.

Well, the pictures don’t move, but they are in fact rather moving. Holt's work is a kind of poetic diary in written, drawn and assembled fragments. The exhibition as presented in the Library’s gallery has a sleek, minimalist appearance, belying the character of the work however, which is brimming with images, ideas, references, warmth, humor, angst and violence. I call it manga autobiography because that’s what came to mind after seeing it, and it turns out to be a fairly apt description; manga translates from the Japanese as “flowing or undisciplined words.”

The pieces are drawn and assembled on narrow, Japanese-style foldout plywood books which act as frames, extending in most cases over nine feet. There is also a display case where a collection of the artist’s sketchbooks are laid open for viewing.

Holt describes himself as a painter, illustrator and educator; he also does murals (occasionally on commission), works in assemblage and video and does some curating. As the present show confirms, he is also an original and prolific diarist.

Originally from Carmel, NY, he went to SUNY New Paltz, earning his BS in Visual Arts. He moved to Buffalo in 2002 and served as the Education Coordinator at the Burchfield Penney Art Center from 2006 to 2008.

There is a pretty wide diversity of stuff happening in the books, from the fantastic (winged eyeballs) to the mundane (bored, watching YouTube on the computer). The common thread here, however, is the artist looking at himself and the world around him and creating a visual and narrative commentary.

There are several wordless sequences of images that seem to be drawn somewhat at random from the subconscious of a mind fed in its formative years on a restricted diet of comic books (manga and otherwise), cartoons, video games, computer code, skate boards and fast food. This turns out to be not quite the case. At the opening reception, in response to a question about a certain image, Tom started from the beginning of the piece and provided an image-by-image breakdown of its meaning, not unlike a “director’s commentary” on a DVD. So, even the wordless pieces turn out to hold together remarkably well as carefully thought-out experiential narratives.

The work describes events both personal and mythological which have brought the narrator to the present. Although much of the imagery is autobiographical, the intent of the dynamic goes beyond the personal: the forces of life, which through circumstance and preference, have formed us yesterday carry us into today with all our pasts intact and then throw us forward into the new. All tomorrows may result in continuations of today or may catapult us into revelation, depending on our choices and viewpoints.

One unexpectedly sweet piece begins with a boy (one of many little Tom alter-egos we meet in the show) holding a cat and facing into the future. The entire middle section of the book is empty and the final image is a big red, valentine heart; leaving one to fill in one’s own life experience, actively participation in the creation of the piece.

The exhibition continues until February 12.
