Romantic-comedy enthusiasts beware.
Although How Do You Know boasts a collection of familiar faces in its trailer, its overall appeal did not quite match its anticipation.
Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, Paul Rudd and Jack Nicolson each provide their share of laughs, with a focus on relatable, awkward moments. However, too many storylines, each lacking desired development, created dragging scenes and confusion.
Lisa (Witherspoon), an eternal optimist, finds herself in an identity crisis after being cut from the USA softball team, causing her to reevaluate her relations with her monogamy-fearing, professional baseball player “boyfriend” (Wilson). A non-traditional blind date with George (Judd), a corporate people-pleaser with plenty baggage of his own, further perplexes the dysfunctional dater.
The relationships in this film are certainly not the typical tales of love, exploring the messy details of a father-son business team, a pre-marital birth, fame, sex and money, sans racy scenes. Although its humor is what saves this film in the end, it also makes some of these connections less believable.
Overall, Witherspoon’s flightiness, Wilson’s unavoidable arrogance and Judd’s missing spine, makes character interactions frustrating at times. However, their typical charm and talent compensate, resulting in an average romantic comedy.
Although this film will probably not leave viewers with that heart-touching feeling found in Love Actually or The Notebook, this chaotic, modern-day love story is worth seeing. Just wait a few months for it to appear in a $1 Redbox.
