Legendary Metallica Tribute Band BATTERY Thrashing through Cojones
“Expect nothing short of shear fantastic Metallica"
The idea of a tribute band usually involves a few songs from Journey or Boston or even a trip to the local karaoke bar, but on Friday January 14th, Cojones in Olean is about to experience what it means to pay tribute to a band. Battery is not just a band that plays Metallica, it's a band that breathes, thinks, and lives Metallica every time they step on stage. Originally from Canada, Battery does more than play the part, they live the part.
The band has been playing for almost 20 years, touring the country as tribute to one of the best rock bands ever assembled, Metallica. What makes them unique, is they take the job very serious.
“We need to come out and bang our heads,” Drummer Laurence Langley said regarding their performance. “if we are to represent a Metallica tribute, we need to strap-up and do it right!”
Battery was signed back in the early 90's with intentions of spawning off on their own creation known as Disaster Area. They performed as two bands, the original band Disaster Area and the tribute band. While they had original songs, acting as a tribute band was paying the bills and opened up an unbelievable opportunity. “Our manager called and said Lars Ulrich from Metallica wants us to go on tour with them,” Langley said. “ It was unbelievable, a dream come true!"
It was a perfect storm since Metallica released the 98' album “Garage inc.” involving nothing but covers, so the band wanted some one to cover them. “It was like they were giving us their stamp of approval,” Langley said. “It is the best thing to ever happen to a tribute band.” Langley, the drummer and original member of Battery explained the experience as exhilarating. “I remember playing and barely three feet away from us on the side of the stage was James Hetfield (lead singer for Metallica), he watched us with this big grin on his face."
Now Battery is one of the most well known tribute bands to date. In Feb 2000 they were featured on MTV and voted “Best Metallica Tribute Band”. They are currently on tour, bringing the music of Metallica to life all along the eastern United States. For New Years they will be in Buffalo and then making stops in Pittsburgh, New Jersey, and then on January 14th they will be at Cojones Cantina located at 202 West State in Olean. The opening acts are LT. Hambeast and The Dredneks.
According to Cojones owner Sean Budd, people should plan to get their tickets pre-sale for the show. “The first time we had them we sold out,” Budd said. “We even had to turn people away.” Tickets are on sale now and they are $10 at the door and $5 pre-sale. While Sean is happy to have Battery come to Olean, it's the Dredneks that should be thanked for their arrival. “The Dredkecks were responsible for bringing them in,” he said. “They are big fans and convinced them to come in town and it's been a couple times a year ever since.”
Every year the Dredneks have been opening for Battery and for good reason. “The Dredneks are unbelievable, they do a great job and real energetic,” Drummer Laurence Langley said. “ The Violinist (Tanaka VanDruff) from Dredneks played violin for Master of Puppets, and it was really awesome.”
The show will start at 8pm and you can expected it to run all night. And according to Langley, it will be simply awesome. “Expect nothing short of shear fantastic Metallica,” he said. “we love playing Olean and we are really looking forward to it, it's a great fan base.” For more info on Battery, go to disasterarea.org
