Single T Comedy has first-show success

Saturday night, the Bartlett Country Club became a comedy club. Local Comedian Mathew Kratts brought his signature Mat “Single T” Comedy show back to the Olean area, packing the house to standing-room capacity.

Kratts recruited his best comedians from Upstate New York to the club, and they did not let anyone down. After a short introduction by “Single T,” Gowanda native, Chet Wild , took the stage.

No one within sight of the man in the orange Buffalo State hoodie could be considered safe as he interacted with the audience, including a group of women off to the side or a man at the bar, trying to “watch sports on a muted TV” instead of listening to the live comedy show. He even poked fun at the former mayor for having the "white van with no windows".

Nothing was off-limits to Wild as he joked about the show being at a country club, taking off the communion wafers at a friend's church, calling them 'Jesus Chips,' and life as a residence hall director, over-seeing the residential life of 200 Freshman students.

Wild's show was the blast that showed why Mat “Single T” Comedy show was 18-and-over. The humor was perfect for the setting, made up of nearly all ages and a wide cross section of the areas demographic.

Wild's 15-minute set went by too fast. His self-depreciating humor and willingness to push the envelopes of religion, race and gender make him a comedian to see over and over again.

The night's headliner, Jamie Lissow, who has performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late, Late Show with Craig Kilborn and a segment of Comedy Central's Premium Blend, started the show off with what could only be called a true observation of the City of Olean.

“I put Olean in my navigation and it said, “Really?”

Setting the tone with a small rural city ideology, Lissow made it a point to find out about the people of the area by getting to know his audience. A math teacher, a St. Bonaventure Business Professor, who happens to hail from Mississippi, and what appeared to be the same group of ladies that bore the brunt of Wild's routine all became fodder for Lissow.

In what seemed like a spontaneous situation, the conversation with the math teacher generated something this reviewer has never before heard...a Pythagorean Theorem joke. Now, in my untrained view of comedy, it takes a legendary comedian to come up with that kind of material.

What made the crowd roll over in pain was Jamie's improvisational jokes about the squirrel statues surrounding Olean and local resauarants like Beef and Barrel and Granny's Verona sounding like an old folks home.

"I've heard so much feedback from people about how good the show was" host Mathew "Single T" Kratts said. " I'm just glad they had fun and hope they come back in January for Dan Viola."
