To “The Listening”: the Shining Story of LIGHTS
LIGHTS Valerie Poxleitner is not your typical 23-year-old Canadian. As the recipient of the 2009 Juno (the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy Award) for New Artist of the Year, she has really made a name for herself.
LIGHTS was born in Timmins, Ontario in 1987, but moved to North Bay two months after. While growing up, LIGHTS’ family moved around a lot. They moved to Jamaica for six months, and then spent three years in the Philippines. She was homeschooled by her mother.
Her family moved back to North Bay in 1997, and LIGHTS started to fall in love with music. She had really bad nightmares when she was a child, and every night her father would play the acoustic guitar to help her go to sleep.
“It made the nightmares go away.” LIGHTS said. “This made music meaningful to me; the fact that music helped me sleep peacefully really made me love it.” LIGHTS’ dad is an architect.
And her mom, well, “my mom so amazing. She’s into so many different things. She had an astronomy phase; she built a whole kitchen on her own, she’s so creative. She’s just the most talented woman.” LIGHTS said her mom inspired her to do not just one but to do everything.
When LIGHTS was just nine, her dad started teaching her how to play the guitar. And by the time her family moved to Vancouver, LIGHTS and her older sister had started composing songs together.
“We used to sing and write songs together all the time.” LIGHTS explained. “She was really good, but eventually she just stopped and we went on different paths. I just kept going and kept making music.” Her sister is now a teacher and married.
During her teenage years, LIGHTS really started to develop her music and by 15 she had her own manager. When LIGHTS was eighteen, she moved to Toronto on her own.
“It was really where I needed to be in Canada for music.” LIGHTS said. “My parents were fine with it; they had wanted me to move out since I was 16! They were like, you’re ready for this.” She started to come out with a few good songs, like “February Air” (now one of her biggest hits) and posted them on her MySpace page.
When LIGHTS first moved to Toronto, she had her manager and knew some producers, but that was it. So, she started looking for a drummer and a keyboarder. She put out ads on MySpace and flyers at music stores.
“It was really MySpace that did it,” she said. “I started meeting up with a bunch of people at Starbucks for interviews, and tried to figure out if I’d get along with them.”
LIGHTS finally ended up with Adam and Maury, who are still her band mates today. “As a solo artist, it’s easy to go through bands pretty quickly. I think it’s important to try to keep the same people, to keep that connection on stage.” it was one of her first big steps to making on her own.
And changing her first name to LIGHTS a couple of years ago was another move in developing her career and who she was. “It just felt natural, like I was walking into the person I was growing into. You know, to develop your image you get tattoos, change your hair, and so changing my name was just another step. It just felt right.”
LIGHTS started playing at, “crappy little bars in Toronto, or whatever we could get.” Even when her MySpace page had 1 million hits, LIGHTS was still wearing lifting gloves to carry her keyboard on and off public transit, so she wouldn’t cut her hands.
Finally, LIGHTS had her breakthrough. Old Navy started watching her page, and they used four of her songs for their spring collection, two of them being “February Air” and “The Last Thing on Your Mind”.
“It was good because people had to really search to find out who the singer was if they liked the song. I had 40,000 plays in one day on my MySpace page because of it. I was so happy.”
LIGHTS put her first EP out in 2008, which included six songs, like “February Air” (which reached number 3 on the MuchMusic countdown in Canada) and “Drive my soul” (which reached number 1 on MuchMusic). She won the 2009 Juno from her EP alone.
Ever since LIGHTS hit the road with a ton of different bands, touring around Canada, the UK and the United States, she’s been working very hard, continuing to write songs and making sure all of her WebPages are up to date. She has now come out with her full album, “The Listening”.
“The Listening is about the realization that I need to just look back and listen sometimes, because I talk really fast and sometimes I’ll accidentally say the wrong thing; it’s so important to reflect on what you say.” LIGHTS explained.
LIGHTS’ main goal is to come out and make another good record she’s happy with, and to create another world for her fans. “So far, I’ve gone far beyond what I ever thought I could do.” She said.
Creating another world and a new experience for people is something LIGHTS has always been passionate about. “I always wanted to go into game design.” LIGHTS said. She’s taking online computer science classes at the University of Toronto, “so maybe I’ll do both someday.”
And she certainly can.
