Mojo Hand Heats Up Western New York
When you think of a blues band you might think of slow relaxing music, but Mojo Hand will put that thought to rest once you hear them play.
“I think there’s a misconception about the Blues,” said Andrew Widger, a founding member of the band. “Some people think it’s all down in the dumps slow ‘I’m going to shoot myself in the head this morning’ type of music and that has it’s place, but there is also the ‘I’m going to pick myself up, I’m going to have fun and push on and laugh about the ironies in life’; we play very danceable music and that’s our focus.”
The band has been through many member changes over the years, now on its third drummer, the band says Mojo Hand is practically brand-new.
“Even though the band has been around, the name and these guys, this is a new line up,” said Drew Gaeta, the band’s guitarist. “It really is kind of like a new band.”
Mojo Hand with the legendary Fontilla Timmons holds in it roots to the start of American Blues with a common item sung about in many songs; the “Mojo Hand.”
“A Mojo Hand is a voodoo love charm that people will go to a voodoo person in New Orleans or wherever and get a mojo hand that’s supposed to make you irresistible to whoever you want to be irresistible to,” said Andrew, the bass player and second vocalist.
When the band originally started playing in 1990, other bands in the area were playing Top 40 hits and most felt forced to play the Top hits, he said, but Mojo Hand changed that.
“I think we were helpful in opening up the music scene around here to playing all sorts of music,” Andrew said. “(We were) one of the first bands around here to play Blues.”
Since 1990, very few blues bands have risen up in the Olean area, leaving Mojo Hand the “go-to” blues band in the area.
“When we first started it was like ‘is anyone going to come listen to us?’ because everyone was expected to play the hits,” he said. “There wasn’t much competition.”
According to Andrew, what sets the band apart from others can be summed up in one word: Fontilla.
“She’s the focal point of the band and she sings as well as anyone around the world,” he said.
“She’s one of the best female singers ever,” said Tim Sader, the band’s drummer. “Everybody’s a good musician in the band but she’s outstanding”
Fontilla joined the group in 1998 after her former band “Blue Wax” broke up.
“When we retired the band, so to speak, Mojo asked me if I would be interested in participating with them and that was great,” said she, lead vocalist. “I always did enjoy them when I wasn’t singing or performing.”
Another member of Mojo Hand is Tom Barnes, a saxophone player who currently performs at selective gigs because of health reasons, Andrew said.
The band plays a lot of classic, old Blues and modern Blues, but is slowly starting to mix in more originals, he continued.
“The thing about doing blues covers is a lot of people haven’t heard them before anyway so it’s like new songs to a lot of people,” Andrew said. “And it’s a tradition in the blues to cover other peoples songs and change them a little bit, put a little bit of your own twist on songs.”
However, Mojo’s blues music isn’t scripted down.
“When it’s the best it’s really spontaneous,” guitarist Drew said.
“There’s a lot of improvisation as far as guitar and harp (harmonica) solos,” Andrew said.
Mojo Hand usually plays at bars, restaurants, weddings and festivals, and gets the crowd going.
“We want to get people involved, dance and have a good time,” he continued.
Chris Barr, an audience member who has followed the band for a few years now agrees.
“(I) like their jazz, plus Fontilla is pretty energetic,” she said.
From the stage, Fontilla joked, “the drunker you get, the better we sound.”
The band members’ great sound comes from their tight-knit relationship, Drew said.
“We have a really good chemistry,” he continued. “A real natural chemistry … (that) we’re anxious to have people around here to hear.”
What attracts people to Mojo’s music is different for each person, said John McMullen, a founding member of the band and its harmonica player.
“I think with a lot of blues, you first catch on to it because of the fun beat or if it isn’t that it’s the catchy lyrics and sometimes it’s both,” he said.
Within the blues, the band plays a variety of different types.
“One thing we’ve always tried to do is to play a variety of musical fields within the blues,” Andrew said. “The shuffle beat, it’s a great beat but if you play it all night long it tends to sound the same. We do that, we do funky blues, we do a little more rock ‘n’ roll-ish type of blues, straight beats – we try to mix it up so people aren’t bored with it.”
Some of the band’s favorite songs to play are “Leave Your Hat On,” “Spoonful,” “Flip, Flop and Fly” and “You’re Just Like Dynamite Baby.”
These songs are ones to drive people to the dance floor, or as John puts it, “Blues music is more of a way to lose the blues than to get the blues.”
“When you have a stressed out day, music makes it work,” Fontilla said.
She hopes that with every performance the crowd forms an emotional connection with the band and its music.
“As long as it’s inspiring … give (the crowd) something to think about,” she continues.
About 10 years ago, Mojo Hand released a CD of cover songs, but now wishes to create a new CD with original songs on it. Mojo Hand hopes to create this CD within the next year or so and will sell it at performances, Widger said.
Western New Yorkers will have the chance to hear Mojo Hand perform at many different locations within the next few months, such as Carpies Bar and Grill in Cuba Lake, Central Lanes in Salamanca and City Limits in Olean, as well as many others across Western New York.
