‘Diary of Anne Frank’ to be performed at Pitt-Bradford Oct. 13

BRADFORD, Pa. – A production about Anne Frank, a German Jewish teenager who was in hiding with her family during the Holocaust, will be performed Wednesday, Oct. 13, at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.

The Barter Theatre of Abington, Va., will present “The Diary of Anne Frank” at 7:30 p.m. in the Bromeley Family Theater in Blaisdell Hall. Cost is $24 to $29 for the public and $10 to $12 for students, depending on the seat. The production is part of the university’s Prism series.

A matinee for area school students on Oct. 14, part of the Kaleidoscope school series, has been sold out, though those wishing to attend can be accommodated in the Oct. 13 performance.

The play, featuring a 10-person cast, is centered on Anne’s published diary. For more than two years, from July 1942 through August 1944, her family and another Jewish family were in hiding from the Nazis in wartime Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Anne died in March 1945 from typhus she contracted as a prisoner in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.

Dr. Wayne Brinda, assistant professor of education at Pitt-Bradford and an expert on teaching the Holocaust to adolescents, said having the “Diary of Anne Frank” being performed in Bradford is important.

“The reason it is important to bring ‘Diary’ to the Bradford community is that while young people read about the history of the Holocaust, it is essential to put a real face and real emotions to the history,” he said. “The Holocaust is a huge and important history that is not about dates – it’s about people and one person at a time. While ‘Diary’ is only a part of the history, it is a part to which young people can relate.”

The Bristol Herald Courier reviewed the Barter Theatre’s production: “Many might consider ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ to be a wholly depressing play, but it is far from it. In fact, it is probably one of the theater’s strongest affirmations of human resilience in the face of the most inhuman of situations.”

The Barter Theatre has produced many award-winning actors and also captured a Tony Award, given for the first time to a professional regional theater.

When the play made its debut at the Cort Theatre on Broadway in 1955, it earned both a Tony Award for Best Play and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
